ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to evaluate qualitatively the surface roughness of a porcelain subjected to there different polishing systems. Forty-eight samples were manufactured of percelain VITAVM®9 (VITA Zahnfabrik), whose surfaces were worn away with diamond burs and divided into three groups: Group 1 was polished with rubber abrasive (Edentulous), felt and folder diamond; Group 2 was polished with rubber abrasive (Shofu), felt and diamond paste; and Group 3 was polished with disk of aluminum oxide (Sof-Lex), felt and folder diamond. Later, the samples were photographed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), with extensions of 1.000 times and then each surface roughness were analized. It was made a comparison between the areas of the samples and was observed the difference in the quantity and quality of the slots of each one. With the limitations of the study, the Shofu system of polishing was considered the best among the other kind of tested systems.
